{"id":550,"date":"2012-07-19T19:35:49","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T18:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heraldika.org.mk\/?page_id=550"},"modified":"2018-08-03T10:48:50","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T08:48:50","slug":"vexillology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/heraldika.org.mk\/en\/vexillology\/","title":{"rendered":"Vexillology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Vexillology<\/strong> is the &#8220;scientific study of the history, symbolism[,] and usage of\u00a0<a title=\"Flag\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flag\">flags<\/a> or, by extension, any interest in flags in general&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vexillology#Smith1975\">Smith 31<\/a>) It is formally defined by the\u00a0<a title=\"International Federation of Vexillological Associations\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Federation_of_Vexillological_Associations\">International Federation of Vexillological Associations<\/a> (FIAV) constitution as &#8220;the creation and development of a body of knowledge about flags of all types, their forms and functions, and of scientific theories and principles based on that knowledge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The term was conceived in 1957 by the American scholar and vexillologist\u00a0<a title=\"Whitney Smith\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whitney_Smith\">Whitney Smith<\/a> and first appeared in print in 1959 (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vexillology#Smith1975\">12<\/a>). It was originally considered a sub-discipline of\u00a0<a title=\"Heraldry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heraldry\">heraldry<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vexillology#Smith1975\">Smith 12<\/a>), and is still occasionally seen as such. A person who studies flags is a\u00a0<em>vexillologist<\/em>; a person who designs flags is a\u00a0<em>vexillographer<\/em>; and any person who simply likes, admires, or enjoys flags is a\u00a0<em>vexillophile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since 1965, an\u00a0<a title=\"International Federation of Vexillological Associations\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Federation_of_Vexillological_Associations#International_Congresses_of_Vexillology\">International Congress of Vexillology<\/a> (ICV) has been organized every two years under the auspices of FIAV.
